The big airlines get cold feet

ON MONDAY Delta and other major American airlines increased prices on first-class, business-class, and seven-day advance tickets in an apparent attempt to wring a few more bucks out of business travellers. Short flights went up $20 each way, medium-range flights went up $40 each way, and long-haul flights over 1,500 miles went up as much as $60 each way.

Middle East aviation appears to be a picture of economic health: passenger growth is up 13 per cent, compared with 4 per cent worldwide. Freight is up 10 per cent, while the rest of the world is down slightly.
The region is buying aircraft and building facilities rapidly: Middle East carriers have ordered more than 500 aircraft, of which about 120 are scheduled for delivery this year, and some $30bn is slated for investment in airport projects.

Alitalia Will Join Air France-KLM, Delta Venture

MADRID/LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways signed an $8 billion merger to create the world's third-largest airline on Thursday, bringing a three-way tie-up with American Airlines (NYSE:AMR - News) a step closer.
The deal between BA and Iberia, which the pair hope to complete by December, is designed to help BA and Iberia stem over $1 billion of combined annual losses following the worst industry downturn in decades.

According to Financial Times, (FT) both BA and the European Commission, Europe's top antitrust watchdog, confirmed on Sunday that competition officials had started consulting with rival airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic, about the concessions that the three carriers had offered to address potential anti-competitive implications of the deal.

Heijmans Non-residential Building and Heijmans' subsidiary Burgers Ergon Technical Services will jointly realize the construction of the new buildings for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee at Schiphol. This involves an office building and quarters for accommodating Marechaussee personnel on duty. The contract was signed by the Dienst Vastgoed Defensie (Ministry of Defence, Property Service) and Heijmans on Thursday 26 November. The overall contract is valued at approximately €45 million.

British Airways, Iberia agree to $7 billion merger

MADRID/LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways and Spain's Iberia announced on Thursday a preliminary agreement for a $7 billion merger to create the world's third-largest airline by revenue.The deal, which the companies hope to close by the end of 2010, ends the British flag carrier's long pursuit of Iberia to create an enlarged group, able to cope with the industry's largest downturn in decades.
