New Warnings About Costs of Nuclear Power

As anticipation grows about a possible renaissance for the nuclear power industry - and about its potential for curbing greenhouse gas emissions - some politicians are stepping up warnings about the high cost of such projects.
Last week, Traicho Traikov, the Bulgarian economy and energy minister, said the cost of building a second plant near the Danube River had reached 9 billion euros, or $11.4 billion, according to the Sofia News Agency.

LONDON --A multinational consortium comprising Iberdrola SA (IBE.MC), GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) and Scottish and Southern Energy PLC (SSE.LN) Wednesday became the third potential new nuclear power plant operator in the U.K. following its acquisition of land near the Sellafield nuclear complex.

According to Financial Times, Gazprom, the Russian energy group, has reached an agreement to makes use of a gas storage facility en the Netherlands, developed by a branch of Taqa, the Abu Dhabi enegy company.
This is another step for Gazprom export division in its race to become Europe's largest gas storage facility before it goes into commercial use in 2013

BUDAPEST, Jun 8 (IPS) - Eastern Europe is promoting nuclear energy as the only way to tackle climate change and reduce dependence on Russian gas, in spite of costs of going nuclear that it cannot meet.

Amid the last Ukrainian-Russian gas spat early this year, officials from several Central and Eastern European countries were quick to point to the need for nuclear energy to reduce problematic imports of Russian gas.
