BUDAPEST, Jun 8 (IPS) - Eastern Europe is promoting nuclear energy as the only way to tackle climate change and reduce dependence on Russian gas, in spite of costs of going nuclear that it cannot meet.

Amid the last Ukrainian-Russian gas spat early this year, officials from several Central and Eastern European countries were quick to point to the need for nuclear energy to reduce problematic imports of Russian gas.

India's Pantaloon plans to raise up to $210 mln

MUMBAI, June 8 (Reuters) - Pantaloon Retail (PART.BO), India's top-listed retailer, said on Monday its board had approved raising up to 10 billion rupees ($210 million) in long-term funds through sale of shares to investors.

It did not give further details.

The company would also consider absorbing wholly owned unit Home Solutions Retail (India), it said in a statement to the stock exchanges.

Global airlines fear oil rally as losses mount

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Global airlines called on Monday for concerted action to prevent another runaway surge in oil prices as the International Air Transport Association nearly doubled its forecast of industry losses to $9 billion in 2009.

The head of the Geneva-based airline lobby lambasted "greedy speculation" in oil markets and accused governments of squandering money raised from aviation while carriers suffer from still slumping demand.

Quarterly earnings reports from major U.S. consumer products makers Thursday show their revenue fell because of consumers' spending cuts and the stronger dollar. Some highlights:
Procter & Gamble Co. - Cincinnati-based consumer products maker P&G earned $2.61 billion, or 84 cents per share, compared with $2.71 billion, or 82 cents per share, a year ago.
Revenue dropped 8 percent, to $18.42 billion.
